National Anthem

One by one, their steps were quick and their faces were brightly smiling. Their arms were stretched out carrying trays of banana bread, muffins, donuts, brownies, cookies, and cupcakes beautifully decorated with colorful sprinkles, as they entered into the auditorium. They were prepared for service. Kids helping kids, they put on their aprons and were ready to raise money for St. Jude children, to help them fight cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

The rush was on. As the other teachers gathered their students to go to class, we had our first customers; one very generous teacher and her group. Then the silence came and the clock was ticking, uh-oh… I thank God for the gift of prayer. We prayed, and as I shared with them what a wonderful thing they were doing to help others, the sound of pitter patter was in the hall and we were up and running once again. When the younger class that came to purchase sat to enjoy their treats, out of the blue, my students started singing…

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?…

This is the beauty of having the privilege to teach. It’s when your students “WOW” you, no money can buy that!

There are times in our lives when we hear a song, a national anthem, and it moves us. As I see our world today and wonder what we will leave behind for our children, I express warm admiration for the words of Mandela in the movie Invictus:

“I couldn’t help noticing the empty offices as I came to work today, and all the packing boxes. Now, of course, if you want to leave, that is your right. And if you feel in your heart that you cannot work with your new government, then it is better that you do leave, right away. But if you are packing up because you fear that your language, or the color of your skin, or who you served previously, disqualifies you from working here now, I am here to tell you, have no such fear. What is verby is verby. What is past is past. We look to the future, now. We need your help. We want your help. If you would like to stay, you will be doing your country a great service. I ask only that you do your jobs to the best of your abilities, and with good hearts. I promise to do the same.”

May God bless our Country and everyone in it always. May God bless our world that there may be peace, happiness and perfect health. May God bless you and me. For we are all a part of God’s great big family, if only we want to be…

For God so loved the WORLD that He gave His one and only Son, that WHOEVER believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

El Shaddai

His character never changes, His love is endless, His power is immeasurable! This is the God we serve who has all authority, and will accomplish all that He has spoken.

The Christmas pageant is almost here. It was great to have Mrs. Pernerstofer and her third grade class join my class for our first and only, semi-dress rehearsal. Everyone has been given their part; narrators, Mary, Joseph The Angel Gabriel, Angels, Shepherds, Wisemen, Innkeeper, and the Herald.

Two classes, one script, music and an audience that will soon fill the auditorium, is a pretty tall order for the amount of time given to us. These are the moments that confidence, hope, and trust can rest in the faithfulness of God.

El Shaddai is the peace that comes from His awesome name, God Almighty, Jesus the Messiah, God with us. As it is written in Psalm 146:6, “He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He remains faithful forever.”

I am looking forward to our classes coming together to present the story of the birth of our Lord. As it is said, “When man comes to God, it is called religion, but when God comes to man, it is called Christmas.” This is the greatest love anyone could ever know.

Blessings always,

Deanna Danielle

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8

All Hands Are In

The greatest love anyone could ever know, is to know God’s awesome love for them. This is why it brings me great joy to teach about our faith. As my class and I gathered around in a tight-knit circle, I held Noah’s Arc puzzle flashcards. I believe working together makes life a little easier and more enjoyable. So, with teams of two, I gave every team a piece of the puzzle.

I shared with our class the story of Noah and how God called him to do what no one had ever done before, and that was to become the first major shipbuilder. God told Noah to go into the ark with his whole family and take with him seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate. He also took seven pairs of the male and female of every kind of bird. It rained for forty days and nights, as Noah, his family and all the animals sailed on to a place where only faith in God could take them.

I shared with our class how Noah did everything just as God commanded. Reflecting upon this story, I thought about how it took a team, God’s team, to bring about this fresh new start. Keeping that huge ship clean and orderly could only work with everyone giving it their all by working together; cleaning up, feeding the animals, collecting eggs, and tending to all the needs that took place. We even get a glimpse of how the raven and the dove helped out, by seeing if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. As I share the meaning of these beautiful scriptures with our class, it is important to me that I show them the joy of working together. With a piece of the puzzle in hand, along with team work, they put all the pieces together. From the unknown to the beautiful, all hands were in. They all had fun working together.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta put it best, “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

May God bless you always,

The Good Shepherd

The chapter we covered this week in class talked about how good shepherds love and care for their sheep. It also shared how Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd. We learned a lot about the nature of sheep. Sheep have very interesting personality traits, many similar to us. We also learned how good shepherds are a reflection of God’s love for us.

In this chapter, all the kids had the opportunity to pretend that they had a little sheep. I believe that once they learned they had to give it a name, they became very close to the it. When I asked them about the name they chose and why, they all gave more or less the same response; “Because I love that person, they are very special to me.” Anabelle said, she chose the names, Mary and God, for that reason alone.

I turned on a video as I shared how they are all very special, and will always be, because God made them and gave them all a meaning and purpose. The film was about a little crippled sheep who felt left out and different. This then brought him a lot of anger, to the point of going out into the wilderness on his own. He wanted to prove to the rest of the sheep that he did not need them. This pride brought the little sheep into great danger as he faced a giant lion. This made Siena turn to me and say, “My hands are sweating!” As she waited fearfully of what was going to happen. Sure enough, just as the great lion was getting ready to feast, the Good Shepherd interceded and saved him.

Even after the blessing of being saved, the little sheep was not very happy. He was still crippled and different from the rest. Then, one night when all the sheep were on their way to the green pasture, he had to stay back at the barn. On this night, there was one very bright star in the sky, and a lovely lady and her husband entered the barn. Next the little sheep realized that a beautiful baby boy was just born. Then, the couple looked around for something to help keep their newborn baby warm on that cold night. The little crippled sheep realized, for the first time, that God had a great purpose for him. The little sheep would be the one to help keep the newborn baby warm.

After the film, I said, “Look at my lips. There is something I want you to remember always.” They asked, “You want us to remember your lips?” I said, “No, I want you to remember not only what I say, but I want you to see what I am saying. I want it to be seen with your eyes, heard with your ears and received in your heart. God made you very special, and has great plans for you.” I have to say, that all their little smiles, are enough to make a teacher feel the presence of God’s great love in the room.

When we feel broken, it is truly a time when we see the hand of God in action, protecting us. As the psalm of David says, in psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

May God bless you always,

Pope Patrick

So the Papal Conclave began, right here at 201 Boulevard! Samantha took the key and pretended to lock the door. Red napkins dressed the heads of our class, as we felt for just a moment that we were all cardinals sealed in the Sistine Chapel. We prayed for our families, friends, each other, and guidance from the Holy Spirit to give us a leader in our church who would be a man after God’s own heart, and a reflection of His great love.

The ballots were passed out and the voting began. After the votes were counted, Kristen announced, that the majority rules, and Aiden M. is our new Pope. We pretended to burn the ballots and held up white paper for smoke. Aiden chose his papal name as Patrick and the class cheered!  Now it’s time to get to work.

When I was thirty years old, a good friend shared her testimony with me. She reflected on words from her Sunday school teacher; “Now go home and remember, always love Jesus!” My friend was only twelve years old when she went home that day and kneeled at the foot of her bed and said, “Jesus, how do I love You when I don’t know You?”  That summer, on the beach with her friends, a woman came up to her and handed her a pamphlet that said, “How to love Jesus.”  She shared how her life had changed after that, and she left me in awe.

They say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” They’re right, and you and I are part of that village. I asked our class what they see when they see Jesus on the Cross. If you have read our class blog before today, I’m sure you already know their response. Yes, you got it, “A Hug!” We talked about how we knew that we’re loved. They shared stories of their parents’ cooking them meals, helping with their homework and even how their brothers or sisters give them a hug or a kiss sometimes. The love they feel is from the whole family.

I shared with them that the greatest love we could ever know, is the love Jesus has for each and every one of us. Corinthians 12:20-26 says; “As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’… But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that were lacked, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

I am so thankful for my friend’s testimony, and grateful for the blessing and privilege to pass down this awesome message she shared with me. Please join me in praying for  our new Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio who will be called Francis. May he have the same drive as Peter and all the chosen apostles and saints to sing the most beautiful melody of God’s everlasting love.

God bless you,

Deanna

Change Of Plans

I am grateful for the opportunity to share God’s love through our first grade class. During the last two weeks, our class has been involved in the filmmaking of 201 Boulevard. My plan was to film one hour a week for two weeks, to prepare for a film festival that I would like our class to be part of.

At our first week of filming, I was asked to take in a second class. No problem. With Dominique, Kristin, Hope, and Juliana helping, we can do this. I had prepared a lesson, so the girls could lead part of the class while I went into another classroom to start filming. I have to say, after filming for a few minutes, I knew we had a lot of little stars in our class, and they were all ready to give it their best. I’d say, “Okay, say that line one more time,” after they had already said it five times. They’d just giggle, with a sigh and smile, saying, “again!” They were so excited to get it just right.

Back in the classroom, the lesson was going on about Adam and Eve. How God told them  never to eat the forbidden fruit on the tree in the middle of the Garden. As Dominique shared how they bit into the apple, Ewan raised his hand and said, “I eat apples, am I bad?” Thank God for His grace as we enter these precious moments and respond to  sensitive questions! Both filming and class were cut short when we were reminded one of our parish priests was waiting for us at the church. We quickly packed up and headed over.

On our arrival, the priest said, “repeat after me.” He said, “Jesus” and the class repeated, “Jesus” and at that moment a few of the kids began chatting, so to get their attention he turned to them and said “HELLO.” In a moment, 28 first graders repeated “HELLO” in his same tone! It was so funny the priest, himself, could not keep a straight face.

As we plan our time, it’s very important that we leave room for change, because it’s often in the change of plans that some wonderful things will take place. As I plan for this upcoming week, week 3, to finish with the filming project, I pray for God’s blessing, peace, grace, protection and guidance to live my life in the plan He has prepared for me. As David said in the Psalm 139:3-18 , “ You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment You know where I am…” This always reminds me that God takes care of us.

Last week was Dominique’s last week with our class, since lacrosse practice has begun. Now, it’s up to Kristin and me to fill in the joy that Dominique’s presence brought to our class. We are going to miss you Domi!

I look forward to sharing our film production with you in next week’s blog.

Blessings Always,
Deanna

“…deliver us from evil.”

Ally asked,“…deliver us from evil, what does that mean?”
“Yah, deliver us from evil?” asked Salvatore.
The Lord’s Prayer,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.
What a great way to start the class. A great prayer and a great question!
“Did you ever get angry at someone for taking your toy?” I asked them. “How does that make you feel?” Do you just want to hit them sometimes? “Yah, my cousin takes my stuff all the time.” All their little stories came out. Well, God loves us so much that He wants us to be aware of the things that can hurt us, or those around us. That is why He has us pray for all the things we need to help and protect us everyday. “Ohhh, that’s what it means. Now I get it.” As they breathe a sign of relief, so did I.
This made me think of this past Sunday’s reading about how God formed us in the womb, and how He has great plans for us. How we need to strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts and most of all, how import it is that we love one another and likewise, what the priest had to say about all this. “Love, he said; is a word we should not use so loosely, for its value is so great. However, it is the action of love that we should practice using a lot more often. How can we love all people all the time, when sometimes they have done what’s wrong to us? It is the gift God gave us to pray, to pray for their salvation. This is the greatest gift of love that we can give always.”
To be able to share God’s love with our class is an awesome privilege. One I am so grateful for. As our class continued, Kristen, mentioned that she could not find her phone. As Dominique called it, we all heard the vibration, but we could not figure where it was coming from. Fourteen 1st graders looking high and low. Their teamwork was awesome. Thanks to Nickolaus, who found her phone in a pail, and made everyone smile.
In conclusion for the day, we headed over to the Church to get more familiar with the main areas of the church, the altar, the pews, and the Stations of the Cross. As we knelt before the tabernacle to genuflect, we looked up toward the cross. For when I ask them, “What do you see when you see the Cross?” they always reply, “a hug!” It was beautiful to hear Samantha say, in the silence of our class, “I just want to go over there and hug Him (Jesus).”
It is the future that our children will hold in their hands, Though I wonder how our hands will mold it for them. It is my prayer that we all join together and ask God to deliver us from evil, from all the evil that is desensitizing our world today.
Brothers and sisters: Love is patient. Love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4
Have a very blessed day,

God with us

As we enter into the second half of the school year. I thought that it would be a good idea to start talking a little bit about First Holy Communion, which will be a big year for our class next year. So, I headed out to buy mini pita breads and some small cups to help in the visual and kinesthetic learning part of our lesson, which is the eating of bread and drinking of wine (we will use water).

I planned to use a felt board to reenact Jesus’ instruction at the Last Supper when He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, giving it to His disciples saying, “This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Then, giving them wine, saying: “This is My blood, this cup is the new covenant which is poured out for you.” Luke 22:19-20. Only, life had a different plan called No Time Left. All the day’s chores and taking my son shopping to get ready to go back to college. Left me with 20 minutes to put all the pieces for the felt board together and pack my bag with all the supplies. As you can guess, that’s not happening… However, I am very grateful for a plan B, which is God’s grace. I had just enough time to grab a video tape about the Last Supper.

The moment I entered the RE office to get my mail, I was told one of the other first grade teachers would not be coming in, and asked if I would teach her class as well. “ Why not?” After all, I have plan B, a movie, and most of all four great teacher’s assistants. Before merging the two classes, I had Dominique take attendance and do a chapter in their work book. As I would do in our class. All goes well, we got together, the movie starts, and the kids are happy. About 10 minutes into the movie, Paula walks over to me and whispers, “I have this tape at home, and it scares me. I don’t want to watch it.”

It took me back to years ago, when our family visited Disney World with another family of friends. Everyone wanted to go on the Tower of Terror. All the kids were excited as we waited on line. I had no clue, to what I was in for… Our youngest daughter Gabriella, was about the age of our class. To cut to the chase, I could not wait for the ride to be over, and neither could she. She was done. It ruined her day. Therefore, we waited at the exit of every ride all day. This opened my eyes to see how scary everything in Disney’s Hollywood Studios can be. Monsters pop up and out of everything and anything.

Now, back to our class. We just passed the part of the video where Judas was receiving thirty pieces of silver for betraying Jesus. They were now in the upper room where our Lord instituted the Most Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. I decided to stop the movie there, and use the pita breads to continue. To my surprise, some of the class was very upset. They wanted to see the video. I thank God for giving me two classrooms. After they had the pita bread and water, I gave them a choice to stay and finish watching the movie or come with me to the other class. It was an even split. All the girls and Gianluca came with me, and all the boys and Charlotte, stayed.

For those who came back with me, I had the privilege to share with them the joy of God’s Word. How God can take the things in this world that are scary to us, and give us His peace, by showing us the awesome love He has for all of us. When I ask them, “What do you see when you see the Cross?” With a joyful melody, they all yell out a HUG!

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His Name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23

Improvisation

Improvisation can be thought of as an “on the spot” spontaneous activity. It is reacting in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one’s present environment and inner feelings. It’s the practice of acting, dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, talking, creating artworks, or problem solving. It’s the act or art of improvising.

This past week I was all set for Monday’s class. The lesson was planned. I brought in one of my girl’s dolls from when they were younger, with a lil’ white knitted blanket for our story time. Part of my plan was to have the kids dress up as Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds,Three Kings, and Angels, as I read them the Christmas story. I wanted them to feel a little closer to the true meaning of this special time of the year. Nonetheless, as I walked into the office to borrow the dress up attire, I found out it was in use for the dress rehearsal for the Christmas pageant.

Okay, time to pray and improv. I looked around our classroom for something to dress the kids in. To my eye’s delight, a box with pink tissues, and by the sink, a roll of paper towels. In my bag was some yellow yarn. ‘We are back in business!’ All I can say is what a joy it was to hear the little giggles of our 1st grade class, as I put the pink tissue on Paula’s head and the paper-towels on Jack’s. They looked sooo cute, as they embraced baby Jesus as Mary and Joseph, while Kristen read them the Christmas story. Thanking God for His provision, this made me think about the blessed Mother. How many times did she have to improv?

God said, “I choose you.” Mary was a young girl who one day was visited by an angel who sang the most beautiful, awe-inspiring song. “Greetings, favored woman, the Lord is with you.” ” Unto you. he said; a child will be born.”  Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, a Jewish carpenter, so she was confused and disturbed as she tried to think of what the angel could mean.  “Don’t be frightened, Mary,” the angel told her.  “For God has decided to bless you.  You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus.  He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His ancestor, David, and He will reign over Israel forever.  His kingdom will never end. Mary asked the angel, “But how can I have a baby, I am a virgin?”  The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the Power of the Most High will overshadow you.  So the baby born to you will be Holy and He will be called the Son of God. “For nothing is impossible with God,” Mary responded.   I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to accept whatever He wants.  May everything you have said come true.  And the angel left.

Now, Mary’s left with much to think about. The angel’s gone, when will this happen?  Exactly how will it happen?  Does Joseph know, and how will I tell him? My family? Did she wonder what she just agreed too? All I know is, most importantly, she trusted God to provide all she needed, and He did! While she was in the later months of her pregnancy, she had to travel to Bethlehem for the census. There was no limo, so she rode on a donkey. There were no rooms in the inn, so she stayed in a stable. There was no bed for her new-born baby, so she wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger. I realized, things may not always go as we plan, but improvisation is a way of life. So on those days when it seems as though nothing is going our way, we should look at the Christmas story and be encouraged. For God has a better plan. After all, what would Christmas be like without the manger? Could you imagine a deluxe building with a golden crib and limo outside to take the place of the stable. Could you imagine a first grade class without sweet giggles. How boring would that be!

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:58

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.                   In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.                            ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

May our loving Lord bless you this Christmas and always!

Thanksgiving Prayer

Well it’s been a few weeks since we had class, and so much has happened since then. For one, I had the privilege to visit my son in Florence Italy with my mom and younger daughter Gabriella. Good food, great shopping, a climb to the top of the bell tower, a tour to San Gimignano, Siena, and Chianti, a beautiful walk through the palace garden, a delightful, (and much needed) Italian massage and above all things, awesome company. A blessing indeed!

On our trip, I read a story about Tom Brown’s School Days, a famous British novel. Tom Brown was a popular boy who attended a boarding school in England. He lived with a group of boys in one of the dormitories. Everything that Tom did had a great impact on the other kids at school. One day a new boy came to the school. That night, before bed the new boy knelt down to say his prayers. A few boys began to make fun of him, one even through a shoe at him. That night Tom could not fall asleep. He kept thinking about what happened to the new kid. He also began to think about his mom and the prayers she had taught him to say before he went to bed. Prayers he had not said, since he came to this school. The next night, as the boys were getting ready to pick on the new boy for saying his prayers. Something beautiful happened, Tom knelt down also. There was silence in the dormitory. His example, changed the thoughts of many boys that night.

I thought it would be great to share this story with our class. So in the garden of our Blessed Mother, Aidan played Tom and Gianluca played the new boy. As we reenacted this scene. I shared with them, how they too can make a difference in the lives of many with their love for God. I was able to turn them towards The Blessed Mother and show them how one life can have such an impact on so many people. Just take a look at Mary’s ‘Yes’ to God. God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God… For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

There is so much to be grateful for… I asked the class; “What are you thankful for?” Aidan, Elizabeth, Jack, Samantha, Nickolaus, and Paula said. “My family.” “Mom and Dad. Grandma and Grandpa, Friends, The whole wide world!” was the responses of Emma, Charlotte, Ewan, Aidan M, Ally, and Gianluca. Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to Him with thanksgiving.~ Psalm 95:1-2 As our class colored in their Thanksgiving pictures, I played this song by The Katinas called Thank You, for them. Their responce, “Play it again” So, here it is!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6i5rLv8xbc

My Thanksgiving prayer; May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. 2 Peter 1:2

Have a very blessed Thanksgiving!!!
